Here are the top 3 mistakes people make during hiring process…

  1. Not paying attention to conative strengths of potential team member. Most companies out there hire based on person’s cognitive strengths (does he KNOW how to do the job – education, experience, etc.). Some organizations go a step further as they look at affective area of applicant (does he WANT to do the job – motivation, personality, fit for a team, etc.). This is all great, but there’s one more step missing… after taking Kolbe A Index you most likely know what I mean – conative strengths (CAN he do the job – will he research the data, design thorough systems, adjust to change quickly, play safe, build quality products, etc.). This can be prevented by asking applicant to submit his Kolbe A Index.
  2. Cloning yourself. This is another major pitfall in team building. It’s hard to not hire person we have so much in common with. This person is so much alike that you just want to hire them. But the truth is that only variety of talent on a team will help you create the best results. You need to be super intentional about whom you need to hire to move forward. You can prevent cloning mistake by filling out Kolbe C Index. Kolbe C is filled by direct supervisor and mirrors his expectations of the job position.
  3. Not being realistic about job requirements. Before supervisor fills out Kolbe C I highly recommend that you sit down and draft your expectations. It’s impossible to find a person who will have all 12 conative strengths. We all have 4, one in each mode. Decide what is the most important for the specific position. THEN go ahead and fill out Kolbe C Assessment. Questions are designed to help you clarify exact expectation from the position, making it easier to find the right candidate.
